Description: The Core Samples feature class is a collection of sediment core and borehole locations and their respective summary attributes. These data were compiled from multiple agencies conducting investigations and studies relevant to outer continental shelf (OCS) non-energy mineral resource (e.g. sand, gravel, shell) management. Many of these efforts were funded at least partially by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) (formerly known as the Minerals Management Service). The summary information for each core and boring location includes (but is not limited to) core/borehole ID, state, date/time, x/y coordinates (and horizontal datum), method of sampling, sampling device, elevation (and vertical datum), penetration depth, percent recovery, study name, and source agency contact information. Digitized core/borelogs and sediment sample data (if available; e.g. layer descriptions, grain-size analyses, Munsell color, etc.) are contained in the related Core Layers and Samples tables, respectively. The associated study report(s) are linked via the Link Documents table. This feature class will be updated as new data are received.
Description: The Grab Samples feature class is a collection of sediment grab locations and their respective summary attributes. The summary information for each grab location includes (but is not limited to) grab ID, state, date/time, x/y coordinates (and horizontal datum), sampling device, elevation (and vertical datum), penetration depth, study ID, and source agency contact information. Laboratory analyses of sediment sample data (if available; e.g. textural classification, grain-size analyses, Munsell color, etc.) are contained in the related Samples table. The associated study report(s) are linked via the Link Documents table. This feature class will be updated as new data are received.
Description: The Core Layers Table contains general information related to layers described and or sampled within a core or boring. Attributes include Study Area ID, core ID, core layer ID, sample ID, top and bottom interval of the layer, Mean Phi, Munsell Color, lithologic description, sediment classification and classification system. Each entry in this table is related to a feature in the CoreSamples feature class of the MMIS geodatabase.
Description: The Samples Table contains information and data pertaining to sediment samples derived from cores (including borings) and grab samples (see Core and Grab Samples feature classes). The attributes in this table summarize sample acquisition (study and sample ID, elevation ,interval, source agency, contact info, etc.), processing and analysis (analysis date, dissolutions, removals, data reduction methods, etc.), and results of laboratory grain-size analyses. Each respective sample entry in this table is related to it's respective Core or Grab Sample feature. If available, data and additional content (e.g. photos, pdf logs, imagery, spreadsheets, weblinks, etc.) associated with individual sediment sample analyses (e.g. phi size distributions, Munsell color, age dating, heavy mineral content, and infauna) are provided within related MMIS geodatabase tables.
Description: The Phi table is a collection of datasets summarizing the grain size distribution of a sediment sample. Sets of sieves with known mesh sizes are used to sort sediment particles based on their sizes. Each "phi" represents a particular sieve level, or mesh screen size. The sieves are arranged in downward decreasing mesh size. The sieves are vibrated for a fixed period of time. The weight of sediment retained on each sieve is measured and converted into a percentage of the total sediment sample. The grain size data gathered into this MMIS table were acquired from multiple investigators and projects, whose research on or around the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) was funded fully or partially by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) or partner/stakeholder agencies. The intent is to build on the dataset as new reports and data become available. Data from pre-existing reports will be added to the dataset as time permits. Attribution consists of over 60 phi levels which represent the percentage of weight retained of a sample after smaller particles have been sieved. The Phi table is linked to the Samples table, which is subsequently linked to both the Grab Samples feature class and the Core Samples feature class.
Description: The Munsell table is a collection of datasets summarizing sediment colors using the Munsell color system, which is based on three color dimensions: hue, value (lightness), and chroma (color purity). The Munsell color of sediment is one of several factors used in the determination of sediment resource compatibility for renourishment of beaches and coastal habitat. The Munsell color data gathered into this MMIS table were acquired from multiple investigators and projects, whose research on or around the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) was funded fully or partially by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) or partner/stakeholder agencies. Attribution consists of sediment hue, value, and chroma for dry, washed and wet samples. The Munsell table is linked to the Samples table, which is subsequently linked to both the Grab Samples feature class and the Core Samples feature class. Updates to this dataset will occur regularly as new and existing reports and data are incorporated into the MMIS geodatabase.
Description: The Sample Attachments table in the MMIS geodatabase contains BOEM-local file paths or weblinks to photos and datasheets associated with collection and analysis of sediment samples listed in the related Samples table. These attachments generally include sample photos (core and grabs), field logs, core logs, grain-size analyses, penetrometer logs, location maps, or data sheets from other analyses (e.g. benthic community biomass) conducted on individual samples. This table is linked to the Samples table, which is subsequently linked to both the Grab Samples feature class and the Core Samples feature class.
